    TOOLOX 46

Toolox 46 is a pre-hardened, quenched and tempered tool steel designed for hot work tooling and demanding applications where strength, hardness, dimensional stability and thermal resistance are key. It is based on Toolox 44 but modified for even greater heat resistance and higher strength. Delivered at a hardness of approximately 48 HRC, Toolox 46 is remarkably tough and ultra-clean.

This steel is especially effective as a replacement for H13 ESR (electro slag remelted), which can suffer from heat checking at elevated temperatures. Thanks to Toolox 46’s homogenous microstructure and low inclusion content (free from oxides, sulfides, porosity, etc.), it outperforms H13 ESR in both technical performance and cost-efficiency due to reduced processing requirements.

    Applications

    • Closed die hot forging
    • High pressure die casting
    • Hot work tooling
    • Extrusion tooling
    • Heavy-duty machine components
    • High-strength engineering parts exposed to heat

    Features

    • Pre-hardened to approximately 48 HRC with consistent hardness
    • Excellent toughness and impact resistance
    • High thermal conductivity and stability up to 590 °C
    • Ideal for nitriding or PVD coating for additional surface performance
    • Excellent machinability despite high hardness
    • Replaces H13 ESR with superior toughness and reduced cost

    Frequently Asked Questions

Toolox 46 offers a higher hardness (46–48 HRC) than Toolox 44 (44 HRC) and Toolox 33 (33 HRC), making it the best option for applications that require superior wear and heat resistance, like forging or extrusion dies.

Yes. Toolox 46 is an ideal replacement for H13 ESR thanks to its homogenous microstructure, lack of impurities, and better performance at elevated temperatures.

Welding Toolox 46 is not recommended for most applications due to its high hardness. If weldability is important, Toolox 33 is a better choice because of its low carbon content and flexibility in hot work.

Despite its hardness, Toolox 46 has been developed with high machinability in mind. Using the right tooling and cutting parameters, it can be efficiently machined without pre-heating.

Toolox 46 is recommended for forging dies, high pressure die casting, extrusion tooling, pressing components, machine parts exposed to high mechanical or thermal stress, and moulds that see extreme wear.

Yes. Toolox 46 is available in round bar diameters from 151.0 to 353.0 mm, and plate form upon request, making it versatile for different machining and tooling needs.
